2  Shift from Gregorian to the Chinese Solar Calendar

 

Contrary to popular belief, BaZi is solar (not lunar). We anchor your chart to Lìchūn 立春—the “Start of Spring” solar term around 4 February. If you were born before Lìchūn, you still belong to the previous Stem-Branch year.

 

1. Compute the Sun’s longitude for your birth date.

2. Check when it next reaches 315° (Lìchūn).

3. If that moment falls after your birth, decrement the Year Pillar by one.

3  Decode the Year Pillar

 

Every year spins through a 60-count loop of Heavenly Stems (10) and Earthly Branches (12):

Jia-Zi → Yi-Chou → Bing-Yin … Gui-Hai → back to Jia-Zi

To find yours, add the number of years since 1984 (Jia-Zi) and take the remainder modulo 60. Match the remainder to the list—voilà, your Year Pillar is born.

Each 30-degree solar slice births a Month Branch:

2. Drop the minutes—BaZi uses 2-hour “double hours.”
